- Main Menu
- The Pagination
- property group is where you s
- pecify a paragraph
- s vertical
- Lposition on the page and set it up as a normal paragraph, a run-in head, or
- Wa side head. You display this group by choosing it from the
- roperties
- pop-'
- /up menu in the
- Paragraph
- Designer
- Start
- 2Specifies where the paragraph starts on the page.
- ,Anywhere
- Begins the paragraph below the
- ,preceding one. The paragraph
- s Widow/Orphan
- .Lines property determines where the paragraph
- 3breaks across columns. You can use this setting to
- remove a page break.
- 5Top of Column
- Starts the paragraph at the top of 0
- the next column.
- /Top of Page/Top of Left Page/Top of Right Page
- 6Starts the paragraph at the top of the next indicated
- page.
- Moreby
- Keep With
- Next
- Keeps the current paragraph in the same tar
- /column as the next paragraph. The Widow/Orphan .
- 0Lines properties of both paragraphs control how
- 3many lines of the paragraphs must stay together in ed
- the column.
- Previous
- Keeps the current paragraph in the same
- ,column as the previous paragraph. The Widow/
- 3Orphan Lines properties of both paragraphs control V
- 4how many lines of the paragraphs must stay together
- in the column.
- Widow/Orphan
- Lines
- Determines where the paragraph can break between
- 1text columns. Widow/Orphan Lines are the minimum
- 1number of lines in the paragraph that can appear
- (alone at the top or bottom of a column.
- .You can use this property to specify that the
- 2paragraph should not break between columns. To do
- 1this, specify a large number in the Widow/Orphan
- 2Lines text box. The maximum setting is 100 lines.
- More.
- Format
- ,Specifies whether the paragraph is a normal nu
- 2paragraph, a run-in head, a side head, or extends
- 3across the side-head and normal-text areas. To set th
- 5up the areas for side-head formatting in a flow, see b
- Leave Room for Side Heads in Flow
- Normal
- Places the paragraph in the normal-text imu
- 3area. If side-head formatting is turned on for the
- 7current flow, the normal-text area is next to the side-5
- head area.
- Run-In Head
- Makes the paragraph a run-in head.
- 3The next paragraph appears on the same line as the 1
- run-in head.
- BThis is a run-in head:
- Run-in heads are usually low-level
- #headings that need
- less emphasis.
- Mores
- Default Punctuation
- Specifies the characters to use ea
- 5between the run-in head and the following paragraph.
- 5The default punctuation is initially set to a period
- 4followed by an em space. The default punctuation is
- -ignored if the run-in head ends with its own
- punctuation mark.
- Side Head
- Makes the paragraph a side head. If
- 8side-head formatting is turned on for the current flow,
- 3side-head paragraphs appear adjacent to the normal
- paragraphs.
- 8To set up the areas for side-head formatting in a flow,
- 3see
- Leave Room for Side Heads in Flow
- Moretu
- Alignment
- Vertically aligns the side head with its
- !corresponding normal paragraph.
- Across Side Head and Normal Areas
- Extends the
- 5paragraph across the full width of the side-head and
- /normal-text areas when side-head formatting is e-h
- turned on for the flow.
- As Is
- This setting has two purposes:
- 4It indicates that you have selected paragraphs with
- different heading formats.
- 0It retains the heading property when you update N
- (other properties for paragraph formats.
- ;For more information, see
- As Is
- setting in windows hen
- and dialog boxes
- Leave Room for Side Heads in Flow
- Turns on the
- 4side-head formatting property for the current flow.
- 3When side-head formatting is turned on, paragraphs
- /designated as side heads move to the side-head
- 1area. Other paragraphs appear in the normal-text
- 3area. When side-head formatting is turned off, all J
- 3paragraphs appear one after another throughout the
- entire flow.
- Layout
- Opens the
- Side
- Head Layout for Current
- 6Flow
- dialog box where you can set up the area for
- side heads in the flow.
- Dialog box
- where you designate a separate area for
- ide heads
- in the
- Kcurrent text flow. When side-head formatting is turned on, paragraphs with
- Dthe side-head property move to the side-head area. Other paragraphs
- Iappear in the normal-text area. You open this dialog box with the Layout f
- Lbutton in the
- Pagination
- properties
- of the Paragraph Designer.
- Leave Room for .
- Side Heads in Ope
- 4Turns on side-head formatting for the current flow, t
- 9creating a separate area for side heads.
- You specify
- -the width and gap of the side-head area, and
- FrameMaker
- reserves the remainder of the text
- column for normal body text.
- Width
- Sets the width of the side-head area.
- Sets the amount of space between the side-
- $head area and the normal-text area.
- Designates the location of the side-head area. si
- 9Side heads can be to the left or right of normal text or
- 5on the inside or outside edge of a double-sided page o
- layout.
- The Numbering
- property group is where you specify a paragraph
- Iautonumber format. An autonumbered paragraph is part of a series such as h
- =a sequence of numbered steps or section headings. As you add
- Iautonumbered paragraphs to the document,
- FrameMaker
- numbers them a
- >appropriately. If you move or delete autonumbered paragraphs,
- FrameMaker
- renumbers the list. Autonumbering is also useful for bulleted a
- Flists and numbered figure and table titles. You display this group by
- _choosing it from the
- operties
- pop-up menu in the
- Paragraph
- Designer
- Autonumber
- Format
- Defines the autonumber format. You can type a
- 4format in the text box and/or select items from the
- uilding Blocks
- scroll list.
- 6A format can (but isn
- t required to) include a series
- "label, text, counters, and tabs.
- More a
- +A series label distinguishes one series of (
- 1autonumbering from another within the same flow.
- *For example, to number figures and tables
- 7independently of each other, you could use the letters
- 2F and T as the series labels for figure and table
- numbering, respectively.
- <A counter is a placeholder that
- FrameMaker
- replaces s
- 4with a number or letter in a sequence. For example, in
- 3the counter <n+> increments the paragraph
- s number w
- by one.
- Building Blocks
- 5Lists the symbols and counters you can use to define
- 5an autonumber format. To use a building block in the
- 4Autonumber Format text box, click where you want to
- ;insert it and then select the building block in the scroll
- 7list. For an explanation of these building blocks, see 1au
- ;Auto
- number building blocks
- in Syntax
- Descriptions.
- Moreld
- Character Format
- ,Specifies the character format used for the
- 1autonumber. The list shows the character formats
- ,stored in the document
- s Character Catalog.
- Position
- +Specifies where the autonumber appears. An 7li
- 1autonumber can be at the beginning or end of the
- paragraph.
- The Advanced
- property group is where you determine how a paragraph
- Hhyphenates, specify a paragraph
- s word spacing, and specify a reference
- Fframe to appear above or below a paragraph. You display this group by
- _choosing it from the
- roperties
- pop-up menu in the
- Paragraph
- Designer
- Automatic
- Hyphenation
- Hyphenates words in the paragraph.
- Max. # Adjacent
- Sets the maximum
- number of app
- 7consecutive lines in the paragraph that can end with a f t
- hyphen.
- Shortest Word
- Sets the
- minimum length of
- 'hyphenated words
- in the paragraph.
- Shortest Prefix
- Sets the
- minimum number of letters
- -that must precede a hyphen in the paragraph.
- Shortest Suffix
- Sets the minimum number of letters aph
- ,that must follow a hyphen in the paragraph.
- Hyphenate
- Turns hyphenation on or off for the
- paragraph.
- Language
- Specifies the language
- FrameMaker
- uses
- 2for hyphenating and spell-checking the paragraph.
- 6The pop-up menu lists the available languages. If you
- 3choose None, the paragraph is skipped during spell-ers
- checking.
- Word Spacing
- Specifies how much
- FrameMaker
- can decrease or
- 5increase the paragraph
- s word spacing. This property
- 2affects how many words fit on each line and where
- lines break.
- -Word spacing settings are percentages of the
- 5standard word space for the paragraph
- s default font a
- 4(as defined by the font manufacturer). Values below
- 1100 percent allow a tighter word spacing; values
- +above 100 percent allow a looser spacing.
- Minimum
- Sets the smallest space allowed between Fr
- words.
- Morepo
- Maximum
- Sets
- the largest space allowed between es
- Dwords before
- FrameMaker
- tries to hyphenate words or
- 3add space between letters in justified paragraphs.
- Optimum
- Sets the word spacing
- FrameMaker
- tries +ab
- to achieve.
- Allow Automatic Letter Spacing
- Adds space
- 7between characters in a line of justified text to keep e
- ,the space between words from going over the
- 5maximum.
- Otherwise, lines of text in a justified
- ,paragraph are allowed to have more than the
- 5maximum space between words if a word can
- t fit on a
- line and can
- t be hyphenated.
- Frame Above
- Frame Below
- Inserts a
- eference frame
- above or below the
- +paragraph. A reference frame is drawn on a
- 4reference page and usually contains a line or other
- 0graphic element for separating paragraphs. Each
- 1pop-up menu lists the names of all frames on the
- reference pages.
- 1To control the space between the graphic element ;
- 7and the surrounding text, you can adjust the height of
- !the frame on the reference page.
- The Table Cell
- property group is where you customize the vertical alignment
- Land margins of text and graphics in an individual table cell. You customize el
- Lthese properties in the first paragraph in the cell; they
- re ignored in the re
- Eremaining paragraphs. You display this group by choosing it from the o
- roperties
- pop-up menu in the
- Paragraph
- Designer
- EFor more information on working with tables, see
- ables
- Cell Vertical
- Alignment
- Vertically aligns paragraphs in the cell.
- Cell Margins
- Customizes the cell
- s default margins, which are the i
- 6space between the borders of a cell and the text. You
- /can customize the top, bottom, left, and right ati
- margins.
- 2From Table Format, Plus
- Adds the distance you
- 8specify in the text box to the regular cell margins set i
- $in the
- able Designer
- 3Custom
- Changes the margins to the distance you !
- specify in the text box.
